How Bonding, Shaping & Contouring Works

Understanding The Basics

This process involves two separate cosmetic dentistry techniques; dental bonding, and shaping & contouring. These two processes are typically combined because they work well together, and can completely reshape and restore your smile.

Dental bonding involves adding new tooth material to one or more of your teeth. Dr. Nathan Williamson will use a tooth-colored dental resin, which will be applied directly to your enamel after it’s been roughened by an acid solution. Then, he will shape and sculpt the resin until it looks like a natural part of your tooth.

When the general shape of the bonded tooth is right, Dr. Williamson will harden the resin with a UV light, and use a dental drill to trim and refine it until it looks perfect. The entire process usually takes only 30-60 minutes per tooth, and multiple teeth can be treated in each session.

Shaping & contouring is a bit different. Instead of adding more tooth material, this procedure involves removing a small amount of your natural enamel. Dr. Williamson will use a dental drill to gently buff away a very thin layer of enamel from teeth that are chipped, pointed, misshapen, or uneven. This provides you with a more straight, even, and appealing smile.

The Benefits of Bonding, Shaping & Contouring

Sculpt Your Smile

Compared to other cosmetic treatments, dental bonding, shaping & contouring has a number of great benefits.

First, it’s typically a lot more affordable than veneers, which are a common alternative. If you want to restore your smile but you’re on a tight budget, dental bonding, shaping & contouring may be a good option for you.

In addition, dental bonding does not require you to have any of your enamel removed during the preparation process, so the process is reversible. In contrast, veneers require the removal of about 0.5mm of enamel, and the procedure is not reversible. If you do not like the idea of permanent treatment with veneers, bonding is a great choice.

Finally, dental bonding, shaping & contouring provide fast results. You can typically have multiple teeth bonded in a single appointment, and the shaping & contouring procedure takes only a few minutes. It may take up to 2-3 weeks to get veneers, so this cosmetic treatment is a better option if you’d prefer immediate results.

For all of these reasons and quite a few more, dental bonding, shaping & contouring is a great option if you’d like to restore your smile. Contact Williamson Dental to schedule an appointment with Dr. Nathan Williamson, and find out if bonding, shaping & contouring is right for you.
